Thames Water fine 'won't increase bills'

World at One

Available for over a year

Thames Water has been handed a record fine of £20m for allowing more than a billion litres of raw sewage to flow into the Thames. The fine is ten times more than the previous highest penalty. Sir Tony Redmond, chair of the Consumer Council for Water in London and the South East, told the World at One that customer's bills will not go up because of the fine, as "the £20m is ring fenced" and "it's not within the sums that the company is allowed to pass on to customers".
