Tanzania's tomato shortage

Focus on Africa

Available for over a year

Tanzanians are grappling with a hike in tomato prices, as some customers in the country's biggest city, Dar es Salaam, say they have seen almost a threefold increase in tomato prices in the last weeks. Whilst the wide on-going food shortage across East Africa is attributed to a prolonged drought, the tomato case in Tanzania is said to be partly due to bad farming. The Â鶹Éç's Sammy Awami has been investigating. (Photo: Shortage of tomatoes in Tanzania. Credit: Fred Tanneau/AFP/Getty)
