SDLP MP accuses the UK government of ignoring the wishes of people in Northern Ireland. Mark Durkan has said that Northern Ireland is 鈥渄ifferent from anywhere else in the UK鈥 post-Brexit and that what he called the 鈥渉ard Brexit mentality鈥 is making its people look at alternatives to the union. Northern Ireland voted remain in the EU referendum by a majority of 56%. Asked by the Westminster Hour鈥檚 Sam Macrory whether the question of Northern Ireland joining the Republic of Ireland is closer than ever, Mr Durkan said that 鈥渢he whole issue is not just surfacing in a new and welcome way, it鈥檚 also pulsating in many quarters鈥. Mr Durkan claimed that the UK government鈥檚 attitude following the EU referendum was 鈥渏ust suck it up, this is a UK wide vote 鈥 tough鈥. But he went on to emphasise his faith in the Good Friday Agreement as the 鈥渁nswer to all of the problems of relationships and difficulties between us within these islands鈥.
