Global population growth: The pessimistic view

Radio 4 in Four

Available for over a year

The current global population currently stands at 7.4 billion people. The United Nations predicts that number will reach at least nine billion by the middle of this century. Some people believe that technological advances will allow us to feed the extra mouths and clean up the planet. However Robin Maynard, a veteran campaigner and strategist and now chief executive of the charity Population Matters, has a very different view. He explains to Fi Glover why he considers that even the current population is unsustainable, using one-and-a-half times the planet's resource limit, and adding billions more people will cause disastrous damage to the Earth's ecosystems. First broadcast on Glass Half Full, 19 April 2017.
