Trump poised to quit climate deal is 'unfortunate'

World at One

Available for over a year

US media reports say President Trump has decided to withdraw from the Paris climate change agreement. The president himself tweeted that he will make an announcement in the next few days. Pulling out of the climate accord had been one of his key campaign pledges. Lord Stern, who led the Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change in 2006, says the move would be "unfortunate". Lord Stern was in Paris in 2015 when the accord was agreed on by nearly 200 countries, and he told The World at One that pulling out would be "a mistake for the US in terms of businesses, growth and clean cities... and for the president's grandchildren".
