The Indian state of Manipur lays claim to inventing polo, not as an elite sport but something played by nearly everyone. It's the game on horseback where teams of riders charge around with long mallets to whack a small ball into their opponents' goal. But the famous Manipuri ponies which carry the riders are facing extinction. The 麻豆社's Anbarasan Ethirajan has been to Manipur, and ridden its famous steeds. 19th century polo players from Manipur: Credit - Henry Guttmann/Getty Images
