Powell: 'Mistake' to form government with DUP

World at One

Available for over a year

Tony Blair's former chief of staff, who served as chief negotiator on Northern Ireland has said "it's a mistake" to go into government with the support of the DUP. Jonathan Powell told Martha Kearney that the peace process in Northern Ireland is "based on a balance that the British government has made it clear that it's neutral", but that "once you have DUP support you're no longer neutral". He said that Theresa May's minority government would be "dependent" on the DUP who will be "asking for all sorts of things", adding that it would "cause serious problems for us in terms of the UK and in terms of EU negotiations".
