Brexit negotiations: 'Imagine you're buying a car'

The World Tonight

Available for over a year

The UK general election result has meant Theresa May did not secure the clear mandate that she sought for her version of a hard Brexit. However, Conservative MEP Daniel Hannan says the result does not affect the outcome of the referendum. "I never met a single voter who thought they were voting for a soft Brexit," he says. In terms of the general election, Mr Hannan says: "Eighty-five percent of votes were cast for parties that want to honour the referendum result." And he says that saying at the outset of the Brexit talks, that you are prepared to walk away without a deal "is the most basic and obvious statement of the truth" - just as it would be in negotiations with a salesman.
