London fire: Were proper safety measures in place?

World at One

Available for over a year

The Grenfell Tower fire has raised questions about what fire safety precautions were in place. There was no sprinkler system, and residents say they did not hear any alarms. Residents have also been querying the advice that if a fire broke out they should stay in their flats and wait to be rescued. One resident told reporters that if he had have obeyed the 'stay put policy', he would have died. The chair of the Fire Sector Federation, Paul Fuller, says he has been campaigning for increased used of sprinklers in built up environments. He also explains the 'stay put' policy and says it has been used effectively in a number of building fires. (Image: Grenfell Tower in smoke and a London Fire Brigade vehicle. Credit: Getty Images)
