The real cost of ivory

Big Boss Interview

Available for over a year

Erik Mararv, a ranger who was shot, says an ivory ban is the only way to protect elephants. The Hong Kong government has introduced a bill aiming to stop the ivory trade that threatens the existence of elephants in many parts of Africa. Erik works for Garumba National Park in the north-eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, bordering on South Sudan. It has just over 1,000 elephants living in the wild, but they are under constant threat from ivory poachers. The park has been managed by the South African conservation NGO African Parks since 2005. Erik talks through a typical day. (Image: Elephant, Credit: Getty Images)
