'Islamophobia is not the same as extremism'

World at One

Available for over a year

An expert on Islamophobia has said "we need to be tackling Islamophobia in the same way we've tackled other forms of discriminatory phenomena". Dr Chris Allen, a lecturer in social policy at the University of Birmingham who helped to set up, and used to sit on the government's Anti-Muslim Hatred Working Group, told Martha Kearney "Islamophobia is not the same as extremism" and is "more akin to racism or homophobia". He added that everyday experiences of Islamophobia for Muslims in the UK were "at street level" with physical or verbal abuse "perpetrated by ordinary people...not necessarily extremists."
