Could this be a cause of depression?

Radio 4 in Four

Available for over a year

We may hear about our brain cells dying from our mid-20s onwards, but in fact we carry on making them in the seahorse-shaped part of the brain where we store memories from our own lives, the hippocampus. Some neuroscientists believe that if someone has depression, this creation of new brain cells or neurogenesis is reduced - they stop making so many new brain cells. In some cases could this even be the cause of depression? Claudia Hammond brought together Timothy Powell, MRC postdoctoral research fellow, and Sandrine Thuret, Head of Neurogenesis and Mental Health, from Kings College London to examine the latest research. First broadcast on All in the Mind, 21 June 2017.
