The Bishop of Crediton the Right Reverend Sally Mullally says she was "disturbed and saddened" by a report which found that senior figures in the Church of England had colluded with a former Bishop who was convicted of child abuse in the 1990s. The report said that the Church protected the reputation of Bishop Peter Ball rather than act on the welfare of children and vulnerable adults who were victims of abuse. Bishop Mullally was not involved in that report but has worked with victims of abuse, also responded to points made on yesterday's PM programme by serving vicar the Reverend Graham Sawyer, who was one of the Peter Ball's victims. She said the Church has introduced new safeguarding training and is trying to change the culture "so that when someone comes forward who has unfortunately been abused, we get the response right ... and we deal with it fast".
