Richard Morrison for Building a Library listens to some of the available versions of Leoš Janáček's Sinfonietta and makes a recommendation. The Sinfonietta is one of the succession of masterpieces from the final decade of of Janáček's life, a period of extraordinary creativity whose source was Kamila Stösslová, a woman nearly forty years his junior. Beginning and ending with exuberant fanfares, it's Janáček's longest orchestral work, a thrilling combination of the unique sound-world and bristling energy so typical of Janáček's late music.
