Charlie Gard: 'Why are we letting a judge decide?'

World at One

Available for over a year

The High Court has begun reviewing the case of Charlie Gard, the terminally ill baby whose parents want to take him to America for experimental treatment, against the wishes of his doctors. An American pastor, Reverend Patrick Mahoney, has been invited to Britain by Charlie Gard's parents to help with their campaign. He tells The World at One that the greatest strain on the family has been "not letting them choose" what is best for their son. The Reverend, who is the Director of the Christian Defence Coalition, added "they are not going to a tent set up in the wilderness with some snake oil to seek some magical treatment for Charlie, but are going to one of the most prestigious medical facilities in the world, so they should have the right to do that".
