Beers, bongs and baby boomers

World Update

Available for over a year

Substance misuse by people aged 50 and above is growing at alarming levels in the western world, according to a paper published today in the British Medical Journal. The increase - in what's known as the "baby boomer" generation - is expected to lead to a doubling of treatment in Europe and trebling of treatment in the United States in this age group. Dan Damon found out more from Dr Tony Rao, who helped carry out the research, and Karen Tyrell, from Addaction, a group that supports people of all ages dealing with substance abuse.
