How much do people look for neighbourhoods full of people like them? A certain type of car, a certain style of garden, certain newspapers in the recycling box… The evolutionary psychologist Robin Dunbar has revolutionised thinking about how humans form groups. He says the old adage that birds of a feather flock together is based on a deep-rooted human instinct, and humans have the capacity to form meaningful relationships with about 150 people. Douglas Alexander tries to find out what we can do about it. First broadcast on A Culture of Encounter, 14 November 2017.
