Many women who have a traditional Islamic wedding ceremony in this country are not married under British law and aren’t even aware that their Muslim marriage has no legal standing. For a documentary Channel 4 conducted a survey, speaking to over 900 Muslim married women and discovered that almost all of them had the traditional Nikah ceremony. 60 percent had not had a civil ceremony, so their marriage isn’t recognised under British law. Solicitor Aina Khan explains what a Nikah ceremony consists of and how vulnerable it makes some women.
