Why are the Taliban so hard to beat?

The Real Story

Available for over a year

After two decades of fighting the Taliban are still openly active in 70% of Afghanistan. A military solution to the conflict seems increasingly unlikely, especially as Afghan government forces suffer from corruption and low morale. So is it time to talk? Razia Iqbal has been speaking to Prof Michael Semple of Queen's University Belfast, who has had high level dealings with the Taliban on behalf of the UN. Razia Iqbal asked Prof Semple if it's time to talk to the Afghan Taliban. (Photo credit: FARIDULLAH AHMADZAI/AFP/Getty Images)
