Homelessness minister gives herself ultimatum

Westminster Hour

Available for over a year

The Government's Homelessness Minister has told The Westminster Hour that she will resign if the problem of rough sleeping gets worse while she is in office. Heather Wheeler said providing people with a home of their own would be "the utopia" of her ministerial role. Street outreach officers from The Connection at St Martin-in-the-Fields church in London told Mark Lobel that rough sleepers often turn down shelters because of paranoia and distrust around authority figures. Westminster City Council leader Nickie Aiken said: "They will fear that they are going to be drug tested, that they're going to have to give their names and even though we say there'll be no testing, because of their life experiences, they don't trust us."
