Why Rust Belt voters love Trump's steel tariffs

The Real Story

Available for over a year

Donald Trump campaigned on a promise to 'Make America Great Again'. Part of that was linked to addressing the decline of American industry in the Midwestern states. He now appears to be keeping his pledge, signing an order imposing a 25 percent tariff on steel and a 10 percent tariff on aluminium imports, despite a huge amount of opposition from American business and his Republican Party. Carrie Gracie has been finding out why the tariffs are popular with many of the Rust Belt voters who helped President Trump win the 2016 election. She spoke with the US historian Thomas Frank, the economist Van Mobley, and Lou Manakis, the former mayor of the Pennsylvania steel town of Monessen.
