The Good Friday Agreement: 20 years on

Westminster Hour

Available for over a year

Almost 20 years on from the Good Friday Agreement, The Westminster Hour's John Beesley has been to Belfast to explore the current state of politics in Northern Ireland. With power-sharing institutions having been suspended since January 2017 and Brexit creating disagreements about border arrangements, the largest two parties - Sinn Fein and the DUP - are in political deadlock. Jonathan Powell, who represented Tony Blair during talks in 1998, said: "I don't think there is any alternative to the Good Friday Agreement at the moment. As long as you have sectarianism in politics, you're going to have to have power-sharing, you can't go to majoritarianism or we'll be back to the bad old days."
