The death has been announced of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela at the age of 81. A family statement said she died peacefully after a long illness, surrounded by her family. The ex-wife of the late South African President Nelson Mandela, was a leading figure in the anti apartheid movement and was known to many as the mother of the nation, but she was also a controversial figure.
