Lord Steel discusses the Jeremy Thorpe trial

Westminster Hour

Available for over a year

Former Liberal leader David Steel has told The Westminster Hour that Jeremy Thorpe should be remembered mostly for his anti-racism campaigning. Speaking ahead of a new drama about the trial which cleared Thorpe of conspiracy to murder Norman Scott, with whom he was alleged to have had a relationship several years earlier, Lord Steel discussed the political world's change in attitude towards gay rights and told Keith Macdougall: "He was a terrific party leader, a terrific campaigner. In particular, I suppose he should be remembered for his resolute stance against racism, particularly in Africa."
