Music critic Jacqueline Springer pays tribute to Tracy Chapman's breakthrough performance 30 years ago this week. At an anti-apartheid concert for Nelson Mandela’s 70th birthday, Chapman nervously appeared on stage with nothing more than a guitar and a microphone as a last minute stand-in for Stevie Wonder. She transfixed a packed Wembley Stadium with a selection of songs from her debut album - including Fast Car and Baby Can I Hold You Tonight - and became a global star.
