Episode details

Available for over a year
Just before the Second World War the Â鶹Éç began to liberalise the way it engaged with the lives of ‘ordinary’ people, moving from entirely scripted interviews to much greater spontaneity. This did not result in sudden and enthusiastic participation by the public. Many would-be contributors were wary or scared of the microphone, and pioneer radio producer Olive Shapley had to work hard to encourage interviewees to speak their mind.
