Pippa Biddle and her US university classmates went to build a library at an orphanage in Tanzania. But she says she soon found out that their voluntary work was worse than useless. Now she campaigns against "voluntourism" - volunteer tourism - in which she says Westerners travel to the developing world in the naive belief that they can do their bit to save the world through a few weeks of mucking in.
