Mozambique's 'Treetop-baby' at 19

Focus on Africa

Available for over a year

Nineteen years ago a natural disaster similar to today's deadly cyclone Idai, hit Mozambique. Homes were swept away under the catastrophic floods which submerged large swathes of the land, and hundreds of Mozambicans lost their lives. Just as it happened during cyclone Idai, many displaced people were forced to find refuge high on the trees to escape the swirling waters. It was on top of one such tree that a woman gave birth. That woman was Carolina Chirindza, and the baby was Rosita Mabuiango. Rosita is now 19 years old and our reporter Jose Tembe met both and asked them about the impact their experience had on them. Especially with history now repeating itself. (Image: Rosita Mabuiango. Now 19 years old. Credit: Â鶹Éç)
