Sudan protest activist: ‘Live rounds fired at anti-government protesters'

Focus on Africa

Available for over a year

For the past 48 hours protesters have defied a curfew by staging a sit-in to call for the resignation of President Omar al-Bashir. An attempt by the security forces to break up the demonstration early on Monday was thwarted by elements of the military, who defended the crowd when they came under fire. One demonstrator, 'Walaa', has been involved in the protests in Sudan since they began in December. She has previously been arrested, and explains that the protestors had more than just tear gas to worry about.
