Mothers of children with Down's syndrome speak out

Focus on Africa

Available for over a year

Elly's son has Down's syndrome, something sometimes stigmatised in Tanzania because of a belief that the condition is caused by witchdoctors. The people who have it are often confined to their homes and live hidden lives detached from neighbours and relatives. But Elly and other mothers are planning to fight perceptions, speaking about their struggle with showing their children publicly and how they are fighting for their inclusion in the community.
