Thought for the Day

Available for over a year

Good morning. As we commemorate the D-Day landings and learn from the personal stories of those affected, I think it鈥檚 important to remember that soldiers from so many diverse backgrounds fought for this country. It feels more important than ever to remember our shared British history and sacrifice and how that can keep us connected going forward. All over the world this week, Muslims are also celebrating Eid with family and friends while saying goodbye to another dear friend, Ramadan. The mixed emotions are felt by many who have been through 30 days of fasting which in the UK has been around 18 hours every day. In the Qur鈥檃n it teaches us to fast 鈥渓ike those before you鈥. A nod of course to the fact that for centuries people of all faiths and backgrounds have fasted in different ways and at different times of the year. This year, the number of Iftar events hosted by friends of other faiths and from all backgrounds has been inspiring and humbling. Cathedrals, synagogues, schools and town centres have all been part of the blessings of Ramadan, demonstrating the beauty of hospitality, sincere connection and friendship. Prophet Muhammad regularly taught that fasting is much more than going without food and drink. The inner dimensions of fasting are intense and beautiful, difficult at times but amazing too. Some nutrition experts are now championing fasting as being good for the body as it slows down and adjusts surprisingly quickly with positive results. I have realised over time that it is more a battle of the mind than the stomach and it feels so good to be able to conquer the ego, resist the temptations and feel more alert through the day while focusing on things other than the fridge door or the work coffee machine. To adjust to eating and going back to old habits feels strange but as with New Year resolutions, it is amazing how quickly we can slip back to our old ways if we are not aware or determined enough. Waking at night for extra prayers, more focus on connecting to the Qur鈥檃n, heightened awareness of people in need, charitable giving more than any other time of the year 鈥 all aspects of the month of Ramadan that I hope to hang onto and make a part of my life after Eid. I have experienced some very special moments this Ramadan. Some have been outside in nature, or in the mosque. Some with friends around and others completely on my own in the middle of the night, a conversation just between me and God that no-one else has been privy to. That kind of spiritual connection is truly something magical when it happens. I have resolved that I will keep connected and open to understanding the Qur鈥檃n better and will keep learning about how I can use the teachings to put my faith into action and be a good example to those around me remembering that actions really do speak louder than words.
