Mozart has us hooked. The beginning of this symphony - with its earnest rhythm and serious-minded tune - is so insistent we must listen. He rewards us with one of his best works. Departing radically from the vivacity of Mozart’s other two symphonies composed that same summer - this one is persistently intense and dark. The lure of formal gentility is suggested by the famous opening theme but tension lingers throughout.
