Symphony No. 2 in C minor, Op 17, 'Little Russian'

Experience Classical

Available for over a year

Tchaikovsky began work on his Symphony No. 2 while on holiday at his sister’s estate in Ukraine in 1872. It is known as ‘Little Russian’ – Little Russia being a name given to Ukraine at that time. Possibly his most 'Russian' work, this symphony uses three Ukranian ('Little Russian') folk songs as guides on the musical journey. With perky orchestration and scurrying rhythms, this is a joyful composition. Composer: Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky Performers: Â鶹Éç Philharmonic Orchestra Conductor: Gianandrea Noseda Recording date: 05 August 2013 Date of broadcast: 06 August 2013
