Brahms must have been thinking of his own mortality whilst conjuring images of long golden autumnal evenings where dusk threatens an unsettled future. Composed as an epitaph to the piano, Brahms’ beautiful melody over a stream of rippling cascading notes brings an air of unease to this Intermezzo.
