Inside Nigeria’s criminal fraternities

Outlook

Available for over a year

Generations of students have been affected by the confraternity system in Nigerian universities – where student societies have morphed into violent criminal gangs. Helen Oyibo hears the testimony of former students: Roland – speaking under a pseudonym – who joined a group and endured a violent initiation; and Professor Wole Soyinka, who, in the 1960s co-founded the confraternity ‘The Pyrates’, and never anticipated the criminality associated with the groups today. Helen asked Roland how he first became involved in a 'campus cult.' Credit: Getty Images
