Nigeria Gender Based Violence: Why has a state of emergency been called?

Focus on Africa

Available for over a year

Nigeria authorities recorded one rape every five hours between January and May this year. That’s according to the Police Chief, Mohammed Adamu who urged Nigerians to report any case. All of the 36 State Governors adopted the call to declare a state of emergency against rape and Gender Based Violence. Activists have been marching for months to highlight the terrible rise in sexual assaults and violence against women especially after a spate of disturbing cases. The Governors issued a strongly worded statement condemning all forms of violence against women. Chioma Agwuegbo is the founder of TechHerNg and was one of many groups that marched to the office of the Inspector General of police then handed a petition to the Speaker of the House of Assembly.
