Hindemith’s Viola Sonata was composed in his home country of Germany in 1937, shortly before he left for the US. It's not an easy listen as it has an overall sense of unrest and hardship. Hindemith was a virtuoso violist himself, and despite the piece’s dark core, his passion for that instrument is clear. Composer: Paul Hindemith Performer: Lise Berthaud (Viola) Performer: David Saudubray (Piano) Recording date: 24 February 2015 Date of broadcast: 13 May 2015
