Mark Trahant, editor of Indian Country Today, explains why Washington鈥檚 NFL team name was offensive. Speaking on Sportshour, the member of Idaho鈥檚 Shoshone-Bannock Tribe explained that the team鈥檚 nickname and mascot 鈥渃ame from an era when natives were sold by body parts.鈥 He also recalled being told by his father as a six-year-old boy not to use the 鈥楻 word,鈥 and believes all US sports franchises that use Native American words will eventually have to make changes to their names.
