Why do so many wildebeests die during the seasonal Masai Mara crossing
Focus on AfricaAvailable for over a year
It's the great trek and a sight to behold, when millions of wildebeests embark on their annual migration. The animals travel from Serengeti in Tanzania to Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. But sadly, many wildebeests die during the crossing every year and last weekend the death toll was particularly high - 300 in a single day. Paul Kirui is a guide and wildlife photographer based in the Masai Mara Game Reserve for the past 30 years, he has been telling Focus' Esau Williams why. (Photo Credit: Paul Kirui)
