Nigeria's presidential spokesman: "Dissolving SARS is the first step"

Focus on Africa

Available for over a year

Garba Shehu, spokesman for Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari, tells Focus on Africa's Bola Mosuro that dissolving the Special Anti-Robbery Squad unit known as SARS is just the first part of an extensive package of police reforms. Mr. Shehu asserted that police officers proven to have taken part in human rights abuses such as extrajudicial killings would be brought to justice. Demonstrations held in several Nigerian cities and by diaspora communities overseas prompted the government to announce that the long-criticised unit would be scrapped altogether.
