What do we know about the 'milestone' coronavirus vaccine?

Newshour

Available for over a year

The first effective coronavirus vaccine can prevent more than 90% of people from getting Covid-19, a preliminary analysis shows. The developers - Pfizer and BioNTech - described it as a "great day for science and humanity". Their vaccine has been tested on 43,500 people in six countries and no safety concerns have been raised. The companies plan to apply for emergency approval to use the vaccine by the end of the month. How does the vaccine work? And is there still a need for other vaccines to be developed? Dr Robin Shattrock, head of the team developing another important vaccine at Imperial College London, explains how he felt at the news of the trial. "It's not the end but it's the beginning of finding a solution." Photo shows: A doctor filling a medical injection. Credit: Getty Images
