Italy was the first country in Europe to be badly hit by the coronavirus pandemic. In March, hospitals in the northern regions of Lombardy and Veneto quickly became overwhelmed. A strict national lockdown brought the virus under control over the summer but as in many countries as winter approaches, it now appears to be back with a vengeance. Professor Maurizio Cecconi, head of anasthesia and intensive care at the Humanitas Research Hospital in Milan, explains how the current situation compares to earlier in the year and the strain of finding the medical specialists to take care of the increasing numbers of ICU admissions.
