The Polisario Front, which administers the part of Western Sahara not controlled by Morocco, says it has carried out heavy shelling against several Moroccan positions in the disputed territory this week. That follows a recent flare up in tensions, after Moroccan troops entered a buffer zone to clear pro-Polisario Front activists who were blocking traffic on the main road linking Western Sahara with Mauritania and Sub-Saharan Africa beyond. The Polisario Front said that action effectively ended a ceasefire between the two parties which had been signed in 1991. Morocco's King Mohammed VI says Morocco considers the ceasefire still active, but "will respond firmly" to provocations from the Polisario Front.
