Dr Mohamud Sheikh Hassan Thani was a member of a group of young intellectuals who organised community self-help schemes in Hargeisa in the 1980s, during the rule of Mohamed Siad Barre. He was jailed for his activities, and a new comic book, Sweet Smelling Wind before the Rain, tells the story. Dr Mohamud Sheikh Hassan Thani now lives in the self-declared Republic of Somaliland. From there, he talked to Focus on Africa’s Bola Mosuro about life in Hargeisa in the 1980s, and about the secret code he and his fellow inmates created so that they could communicate in prison.
