'I was motivated by the barbaric indifference of the global community'

Focus on Africa

Available for over a year

Disturbed by the global indifference to the 1994 genocide, Chilean-born Jaar travelled to Rwanda and neighbouring countries to document the harrowing stories of survivors of the tragedy. More than 800,000 people lost their lives in the space of just four months. Following the genocide, Alfredo Jaar collected images, videos and stories over a period of six years to produce a work to honour the memory of the victims. Journalist Mohammed Allie went to see the exhibition. (Image: Alfredo Jaar Exhibition, Credit: Dillon Marsh, Zeitz MOCAA)
