'MOBO exists to fight for better black representation in the music and creative industries'

Focus on Africa

Available for over a year

The Music of Black Origin Awards have returned with a socially-distant show after a two year break. The ceremony was hosted by Maya Jama and Comedian Chunkz, both of whom are of second generation Somali descent. The awards, which celebrate music of black origin, were streamed on YouTube and featured performances from Brit-Ghanaian Headie One, who was named 'Best Male Act' and rapper Ms Banks. Nigerian singer Burna Boy was named best international act, while fellow Nigerian singer Wizkid took home 'Best African Act'. Focus on Africa's Esau Williams has been speaking to the founder of the MOBO Awards Kanya King about some of the biggest challenges her team faced staging this year's event under Covid-19 restrictions.
