Covid-19: Should we be concerned about mutations to the virus?

Science In Action

Available for over a year

A new strain of the coronavirus has been observed in the UK and this could be behind a recent surge in infections in south-east England, but it's not clear whether this has made any difference in terms of the speed of spread or severity of the disease. Cambridge virologist Ravi Gupta explains that mutations are to be expected - as our immune system attacks the virus, the virus mutates in order to survive. The main concern is that in the long term multiple mutations could threaten the effectiveness of the vaccines designed to combat it. Photo: Stock image of the Covid-19 vaccine Credit Getty Images
