You've probably heard the terms black market, black sheep, black hearted, blackmail and blackout. Indeed, there are many instances in the English language where the word black carries negative connotations. Dr. Agwu Ukiwe Okali, a distinguished lawyer who worked for the United Nations and the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, has written a book about it. He spoke to Focus on Africa’s Veronique Edwards about “Of Black Servitude Without Slavery: The Unspoken Politics Of The English Language”, and his desire to start a movement called Serial the Society for the Elimination of Racism in All Language.
