'Once dried the fish maws are of huge value'

Focus on Africa

Available for over a year

When we think of the illegal wildlife trade on the continent it is often land animals that come to mind. And in the sea, foreign trawlers operating in African waters is well known. But there is another, growing unregulated trade in high value marine products, such as sea cucumbers, seahorses and fish swim bladders, known as fish maws. TRAFFIC a wildlife trade monitoring network is warning of the impact that this is having on both fishing communities around the continent and also biodiversity in the seas. Focus on Africa's Audrey Brown has been speaking to Simone Louw who is the Project Support Officer at TRAFFIC about the trade in marine products. (Image: Fish maws. Credit: iStock)
