Senegal's former finance minister to head global finance institution

Focus on Africa

Available for over a year

Senegal's former finance minister, Makhtar Diop, is to be the next managing director of the International Finance Corporation, making him the first African to hold that role. The Washington-based institution is the private sector arm of the World Bank that advocates for financial support for private firms in developing nations. The announcement of his top job comes just days after the World Trade Organization (WTO) selected Nigeria's Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as its new director-general, which was also an historic appointment. Makhtar Diop has been speaking to Focus on Africa's Audrey Brown, and says Africans can play a critical role in international organisations. Photo: Makhtar Diop Credit: AFP/Getty Images
